The Importance of Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists’ Coverage for Motorcyclists

vehicle-policy

If you ride a motorcycle, here’s one thing you want to make certain you have—the maximum coverage on your own motor vehicle insurance for uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist coverage.

What is Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists’ Coverage?

With almost every motor vehicle insurance policy, there’s an additional rider that can be purchased (for an additional premium) that provides additional coverage to you should be involved in an accident with a driver who either has no insurance or has limited insurance. It’s a very good idea, as a biker, to purchase this additional coverage, as any injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident will likely be serious. As a result, even if the other driver has insurance, if your injuries are extensive, you may exhaust the limits of liability before all your losses are covered.

There’s a fundamental difference between uninsured motorists and underinsured motorists coverage. An uninsured motorists provision applies when the other driver had no insurance to cover the costs of any injury or property damage. An underinsured motorists’ provision is designed to address those situations where the amount of coverage the at-fault party has will not cover all the losses incurred. For example, you may have traumatic brain injury or spinal cord trauma, with projected costs of health care or other needs of hundreds of thousands of dollars or even a million dollars or more. If the person who cause the accident had a cap of $50,000 on liability for any accident, you may need to pursue a claim against your own policy to get the benefits you need.

Cheap Gas Fuels Increase in Injury and Death on Highways

Injury-and-Death

The worst fears of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officials have proven true, as the death toll on the nation’s highways saw its greatest increase in half a century in 2015. Though officials admit that there are a number of factors at play, they point to research that shows a direct correlation between the price of gas and the number of motor vehicle accidents. According to government statistics, more than 35,000 people died on America’s roads in 2015, up about 8 percent over the prior year.

NHTSA representatives cite a study conducted by Professor Guangqing Chi, at South Dakota State University. Chi looked at data from the past 20 years, comparing accident rates to the price of gasoline. His study found that every time gas prices took a noticeable dip, there was a corresponding increase in injury and death in motor vehicle accidents. His prognosis for 2015 was much gloomier than it actually turned out to be—he had predicted an increase of 9,000 deaths on the nation’s roadways.

Chi says the reasons for the relationship are not complicated. The lower the price of gas, the more people are inclined to drive. They may choose to take a vacation by car instead of flying, or they may simply drive more around town. Assuming that accident rates remain the same, more cars on the road for more amounts of time means more accidents, injuries and deaths. Chi says the impact of lower prices hits younger drivers harder, as they are more inclined to change their habits based on the price of gas.

U.S. Motorcycle Deaths Up by Ten Percent

The total number of fatalities from motorcycle accidents in America jumped from 4,560 to 5,010 in 2015, marking just the third time since statistics have been kept that the toll went above 5,000. According to authorities, 31 states reported an increase in the number of deaths involving motorcycle crashes. Most experts say the principal reason for the dramatic increase is the cheap cost of gas.

Public health officials have expressed concern about the potential for a substantial jump in traffic accidents since the price of gas plummeted in late 2014. Studies have been conducted showing a direct correlation between the cost of gas and the number traffic accidents and fatalities. Researchers say that, as the price of gas goes down, the incentive to drive goes up, especially for young drivers, who have less discretionary income, and whose driving may be mostly recreational. The more drivers on the road, the more accidents, assuming the accident rate remains the same.

A study by professor Guangqing Chi, of South Dakota State University, corroborated this theory. Chi found that a $2 reduction in the price of gas per gallon translated into an additional 9,000 deaths on American highways over the period of a year.

L.A. County Deputy Dies in Motorcycle Crash

A 25-year-old sheriff’s deputy from Los Angeles County died in a multi-vehicle accident on Friday, May 27, 2016. Authorities say that Deputy Philip Borja, of Upland, was riding his motorcycle eastbound on Hidden Valley Parkway, near the 15 Freeway, around 4:30 pm, traveling with another biker, when a woman pulled out of a shopping center into his path. Borja struck the vehicle, then careened into another car, a Volkswagen Beetle, traveling westbound on the Parkway. Borja’s motorcycle apparently caught flames, also setting the Beetle on fire.

Police say that the other motorcyclist missed the first car, but also hit the Beetle. The operator of that bike was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but released the next day. No one in the cars suffered any injury.

According to his unit, Borja was off-duty at the time of the accident. He was taken from the scene of the accident by ambulance, but died after arriving at the hospital. Borja was assigned to the Norwalk station.
