In New Jersey, Senator Barbara Buono, has been cited for not wearing a seatbelt when she was in a car accident in February 2013. The Senator was in the back seat and was being driven by a staff assistant. Her aide was Nicolas Rodriguez who had pulled into traffic and failed to yield to an oncoming vehicle. Rodriguez was issued a summons for careless driving. In 2010 New Jersey passed a law which stated that all motor-vehicle passengers in New Jersey are required to wear a safety belt even when sitting in the back seat. People who fail to follow this law will be fined $46. This accident calls to mind another famous car accident in New Jersey involving Former Governor Jon Corzine in 2007, when he lost more than half his blood and broke 15 bones after a crash on the Garden State Parkway. Corzine was not wearing a seatbelt and was sitting in the front passenger seat of the vehicle while driving at 91 miles per hour. Full article.
In addition to injuries caused by defective roadways, not wearing seatbelt can cause greater injuries in the event of a heart attack. Poorly maintained roadways, potholes and other debris can cause your car to swerve and veer off the road. Therefore, wearing a seatbelt, as required by law, will help to protect you in the event of a crash. In addition to wearing a seatbelt, safe driving is key to preventing an accident. For example, under California state law, a driver making a left-hand turn must yield to any vehicle lawfully coming the other way that will cross the path of the turn before the turn is completed.
