As 1,700 participants jumped into the chilly waters of San Francisco Bay to commence the “Escape from Alcatraz” triathalon on March 3, 2013, one 46-year old man died, possibly from a heart attack. The race organizer admitted that the cold and windy day forced them to reposition more participants in the water than usual.
The race was held in March rather than it’s usual June date to avoid conflict with the America’s Cup sailing events, which meant the water and the air temperature were much chillier than usual.
